Drafts and Design is a partnership program among Tulsa Foundation for Architecture and Tulsa breweries that invites guests to participate in a wide variety of hands-on design workshops while enjoying locally crafted beer. Mark your calendar, Drafts & Design takes place the first week of each month. From turning historic Tulsa photos into original works of art through hand-tinting to creating abstract punch needle wall hangings, Drafts and Design offers something unique for everyone. Workshops include all necessary supplies and tools and are led by expert facilitators. A variety of local beers may be purchased to enjoy during each workshop directly from the brewery.

You probably remember “Paint-by-Numbers” kits from your childhood, but do you know the history of how they came to be? A mix between a coloring book and painting on a canvas, painting by numbers allows anyone to create a detailed work of art, even if they’ve never taken an art class. The simple art sets were first invented and became popular in the 1950s by commercial artist, Dan Robbins. To create a kit, Robbins first painted an original artwork, and then placed a plastic sheet over it and outlined the shapes for each hue and shade. Each segment was then given a number and corresponding color. After trial and error, Robbins’ Paint-by-Numbers kits were born, and were introduced to the public with packaging that proclaimed, “Every man a Rembrandt.” Post-war, they were launched during a time when American people had more time for pursuing leisurely activities, and the concept quickly became a cultural phenomenon.

If you enjoy Midcentury Modern architecture, this workshop is for you! Join us at Heirloom Rustic Ales to create an 8” x 10” paint by number featuring a colorful Midcentury Modern House while enjoying delicious local beer. When finished, the paint board will pop into any 8″ x 10″ frame, adding a cheerful splash of color to any home decor. All supplies are included and you’ll take home an atomic era inspired work of art to enjoy for years to come!
